The new school year undoubtedly brings change, and Waukomis High School will see much of it this year as three new coaches have been selected to lead the Chiefs’ programs. Waukomis High School officials have confirmed that new head coaches have been selected for football, boys basketball, and baseball, with Mark Timberlake (Football), Allen Hicks (Basketball), and Derick Hodges (baseball) looking to lead the charge in 2019-2020.

With the football team losing previous head coach, Koy Hughes, to Garber High School in the offseason, Timberlake was chosen to remain within the program and lead it from the front. Timberlake had previously worked under both Coach Hughes and Coach Brandon Bookout as a defensive coordinator, while also helping with the offensive line. Timberlake has many years of experience in coaching, having previously served as both a player and coach for the local Enid Enforcers football team while also currently serving as an assistant coach for the Oklahoma Flying Aces professional indoor football team.

Allen Hicks comes to Waukomis after more than a decade at nearby Glencoe High School, where he assisted the Panthers program in their seven trips to the Class A State Basketball Tournament (and three straight titles from 2013-2015). Hicks is an Enid native, and returns to lead a Chiefs program which has not seen a winning season on the hardwood since 2016. Last season, the Waukomis boys basketball program was 9-17 overall.

Derick Hodges had to travel a bit further to find his way to Waukomis recently, after serving as an assistant coach for the last five years at Hobart High School. The Hobart baseball program was a strong one in Hodges first few years with the school, making the state tournament in year one, and reaching the regional finals the year after. Although Hodges will be a head coach for only the first time in his career when he begins with Waukomis, he inherits a baseball program that had made strides recently, including a trip to the regional tournament just two years ago. Not only will Hodges coach baseball for the Chiefs, he will also be an assistant coach for the Waukomis fast pitch softball team as well.
