In a bit of scary news from Tennessee today, driving legend Dale Earnhardt Jr. and his family were onboard a small plane that ran off a runway and caught fire in Elizabethton.  Initial reports have indicated that Earnhardt Jr, his wife, his 1-year-old daughter, the pilot and one other passenger escaped serious injury in the crash, although Earnhardt Jr was taken to a local hospital to be treated for cuts and bruises associated with the accident.

Reports from the Carter County Sherrif’s Office note that the small Cessna Citation plane made a scheduled landing at the Elizabethton Municipal Airport around 3:40pm local time.  A short time after touch down, the plane ran off the runway and caught fire, with no current reports indicating how or why the plane staggered off its intended course.  Officials at the scene noted that everyone who was on board the plane was able to walk away from the crash on their own power, and that Earnhardt Jr was the only person who required medical treatment after.  Dale’s sister, Kelley, posted this message on Twitter a short time after the crash:
