As the college football season fast approaches, it is only fitting that the top teams in the nation make up the first edition of the Associated Press’s Top 25 preseason rankings.
A familiar face in the Top 5, Oklahoma comes in as the only representative from the state currently ranked #4 in the nation. Last seasons champion in Clemson is unsurprisingly the preseason #1 ranked team in the nation this year, ending Alabama’s streak of three straight preseason polls in the top spot. The Crimson Tide were ranked 2nd in the preseason poll in this release, and were joined in the Top 5 overall with the likes of Georgia (3rd), Oklahoma, and Ohio State (5th).
Big 12 teams of interest also ranked in the preseason list were the Texas Longhorns (10th) and Iowa State (21st) in the nation. Although Oklahoma State was not slotted as one of the 25 best teams in the nation for this poll, the Cowboys were given three AP votes by media members.
An final idea to think about does involve the Oklahoma Sooners, who may be a part of a greater discussion with their ranking. College Football Insider, Brett McMurphy, offered this note on social media this morning:
Since 2004, every national champ was ranked among AP preseason top 7 teams except in 2013 (FSU started at No. 11) & 2010 (Auburn started at No. 22).
So who’s this year’s national champ?
