Illumination Entertainment(LOS ANGELES) — Illumination has unveiled the full-length trailer for Minions: The Rise of Gru on Wednesday, which features Steve Carell returning as a young Gru looking to make his name as a super villian.
The movie is set in the 1970s, with a 12-year-old Gru interviewing for a super villain job at Vicious 6 headquarters. When asked how “a puny child can be a villain?” he makes his case by using one of his patented gadgets to steal a precious stone from the headquarters, leading to a wild chase.
During the chase, he passes the stone off to a round yellow minion named Otto, who’s instructed to take it back to the lair. Gru arrives home thinking he’s pulled off the the perfect crime…only to later find out that Otto traded the stone for a pet rock.
The clip ends with the villains breaking into the lair and scaring the minions into revealing Gru’s whereabouts.
The film serves both as a sequel to 2015’s Minions and a prequel to the three movies in the Despicable Me franchise.
Minions: The Rise of Gru hits theaters this Fourth of July weekend.
