Onward/Facebook(NEW YORK) — Opening nationwide on Friday:
* Onward — Disney-Pixar’s highly anticipated CGI-animated feature stars Tom Holland and Chris Pratt as the Lightfoot brothers Ian and Barley, respectively, who are gifted a magic staff that can bring back their father, who they desperately want to meet as he died when they were too young to remember him. However, there’s a 24-hour limit to the spell. Also starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Octavia Spencer, Ali Wong, Lena Waithe and Mel Rodriguez. Rated PG. Pixar is owned by Disney, the parent company of ABC.
* The Way Back — Ben Affleck stars in this sports drama about a onetime HS basketball phenom who walked away from the game and is now a struggling alcoholic. After reluctantly accepting a coaching job at his alma mater, he gets one last shot at redemption. Al Madrigal, Michaela Watkins and Janina Gavankar also star. Rated R.
Expanding to wide release on Friday:
* Emma — Based on Jane Austin’s 1815 novel of the same name, this dramedy set in 1800s England stars Split and Glass’ Anya Taylor-Joy as a well-intentioned but selfish young woman who meddles in the love lives of her friends. Johnny Flynn, Josh O’Connor, Callum Turner, Mia Goth, Miranda Hart and Bill Nighy also star. Rated PG.
Opening in limited release on Friday:
* The Burnt Orange Heresy — The Rolling Stones’ Mick Jagger marks his first acting role in nearly 20 years in this crime thriller about a British art dealer who’s the patron of a famous and reclusive painter named Jerome Debney — played by Donald Sutherland. Intrigue ensues when Cassidy enlists a washed-up art critic named James Figueras — portrayed by Claes Bang — to steal one of Debney’s paintings for him. Elizabeth Debicki, also stars. Rated R.
* First Cow — This drama, set in the 19th century, follows a cook who travels with fur trappers to the Oregon Territory and connects with a Chinese immigrant. Together, they start a business using a milking cow owned by a wealthy landowner, without his knowledge or consent. Starring John Magaro, Orion Lee, Toby Jones, Ewen Bremner, Alia Shawkat and René Auberjonois in one of his final film roles. Rated PG-13.
* Hope Gap — Annette Bening and Bill Nighy play a couple whose visit with their son — portrayed by Josh O’Connor — takes a dramatic turn with the revelation that the father plans on leaving his mother after 29 years of marriage. Also starring Aiysha Hart, Ryan McKen, Steven Pacey and Nicholas Burns. Rated PG-13.
