The Oklahoma high school spring sports season has been officially cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Next time we have the ability to attend a high school sporting event in Oklahoma will be in August when the 2020-2021 school year begins. The Class 2A-6A state basketball tournaments have also been cancelled.

During a meeting between the state’s department of education on Wednesday, they voted to close school buildings for the remainder of the school year. Every student in Oklahoma will now do their school work online, from home. This included shutting down all extracurricular activities.

This is what OSSAA executive director David Jackson said about the news today to The Oklahoman.

“It’s disheartening to allow those teams that have worked really hard to get to the state tournament to not have a chance to play in it,” OSSAA executive director David Jackson said. “For a lot of people, that’s a once-in-a-lifetime accomplishment.”

Jackson said he will release a full statement after their meeting, which is scheduled for Thursday at 10am.
