(Oklahoma City, OK) On Monday, June 1st, Black Lives Matter leaders called for the resignation of Oklahoma City Police Chief Wade Gourley along with an immediate meeting with Mayor David Holt.

“We demand an apology from Police Chief Wade Gourley and Mayor David Holt, and ask for the immediate resignation of Chief Gourley, whose lack of leadership resulted in aggressive actions by the police toward peaceful protesters, escalating tensions and resulting in violence that could have been and should have been avoided,” the Rev. T. Sheri Dickerson told reporters in front of City Hall.

City Manager Craig Freeman stated that he has confidence in Gourley, “I am not asking Chief Gourley to resign,” Freeman said Monday evening, “and I’m thankful for his leadership in these challenging times.”

After Tuesday’s City Council meeting, Mayor Holt will be meeting with the group after peaceful protests during the day saw riots at night over the past weekend.

At least 38 people were arrested during the OKC protests in a 72 hour period.
