(Enid, OK) The city of Enid’s commission voted down an ordinance that would require all citizens to wear masks in public on Wednesday night. After nearly four hours, including public input, only two of the commissioners voted in favor of the mandate.

Ward 4 Commissioner Jonathan Waddell and Ward 3 Commissioner Ben Ezzell voted in favor. Ezzell joined the meeting via Zoom. Mayor Pankonin, Commissioners Jerry Allen, Derwin Norwood, Rob Stallings, and David Mason all voted against.

The ordinance would have required masks be worn in all indoor public buildings with key exceptions. The number of exceptions was noted by Derwin Norwood who said that the ordinance wouldn’t be much difference than what the city already had in place. By encouraging people to practice social distancing and wear masks, a mandate would not be necessary.
