(Washington, D.C.) The US government has struck a deal with Moderna Inc. to manufacture 100 million doses of the company’s COVID-19 vaccine once it is approved. President Trump announced this deal during a media briefing on August 11th.

Once completed, the vaccine would be owned by the government and would be distributed as part of the US’s COVID-19 vaccine campaign.

Moderna is one of a few companies that are working on a vaccine. Clinical trials are being done to test whether it is safe. If the doses are used, they would be provided to Americans at zero cost.

The government has the opportunity to acquire up to an additional 400 million cases of the vaccine upon approval.
