The OSSAA dropped a bombshell this week in regards to Oklahoma High School Football playoffs. Since there have been 20+ games canceled each week in district play, the Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association has decided to add an additional week to their playoffs.

In a large document released on the OSSAA website, we’ve extracted the important points below:

All teams, no matter their record, are allowed in the playoffs if they so choose.

The 11th week of the football season is declared the “play-in round.” Games will be scheduled on anytime from Thursday to Saturday (November 12-14). Play-in games are paired between Districts 1 and 2; 3 and 4; 5 and 6; 7 and 8. Teams would be matched up across their district with 1-8, 2-7, 3-6, 4-5. The higher seeded team will host the “play-in round.”

If there is a Covid-19 outbreak on a team in the playoffs forcing them to be unable to play, they will be eliminated. If this happens in the first round, the team that the covid-19-infected was supposed to play will advance with a bye. If it happens in the later rounds, the whoever the Covid-19-infected team had beaten to advance to the certain round, will have the option to take their place.

Play-in games will not change seedingIf a team opts out of the playoffs, the team they are supposed to play will advance with a bye and will not affect the rest of the rest of the Class.

Class B’s regular season champion and second place team will receive automatic byes in the play-in round. Since there are only six teams in Class B, the 3rd seed will face the 6th seed, and the 4th seed will face the 5th seed.

Everything moves up a week in the playoffs. So, Class 5A, 4A, 3A and C State Championships are moved to the weekend of Dec. 11 and 12. State Championships in Class 2A, A and B are the weekend of Dec. 18 and 19. However, Class 6A remains the weekend of Dec. 4 and 5.
