More about Green Day’s American Idiot at the Gaslight Theatre:

Tickets are now on sale for Gaslight Theatre’s 2021 summer musical, Green Day’s American Idiot, running July 23-25 and 30-31.

Set during the tumultuous years immediately following 9-11, Green Day’s American Idiot is an electrifying and deeply moving tale of three young friends, aching to escape the stifling confines of suburban life and find fulfillment in the larger outside world. Their individual journeys, and those of their friends, reflect the collective uncertainty of a world changed forever.

First released as a concept album and self-proclaimed “punk rock opera” by Green Day in 2004, American Idiot was adapted for the stage via collaboration between the band’s front man, Billie Joe Armstrong and Broadway director, Michael Mayer in 2010. Additional orchestration and vocal arrangements were provided by Pulitzer Prize winning composer, Tom Kitt.

Aside from the title anthem, American Idiot, the show also contains many of the band’s greatest hit singles including Holiday, Boulevard of Broken Dreams, 21 Guns, Wake Me Up When September Ends and many more.

In addition to a talented ensemble of local performers, Gaslight’s production will feature a live onstage band comprised of professional area musicians and captivating visual effects- all combining to provide a unique theatrical experience, whether you’re hearing the music for the first or for the hundredth time. Leading the creative team are director, Jason Maly, music director, Sean Gallagher and choreographer, Angela Gallagher.

“As with the music, the message behind Green Day’s American Idiot is equally timeless and relevant,” said Maly. “It is a brave and unflinching depiction of youthful frustration, and coming of age in turbulent times. It tackles serious issues with grit and honesty, yet with an underlying innocence and hope that will stick with you for days after.”

This Gaslight Theatre production is sponsored in part by Park Avenue Thrift, through generous contributions from local producers and with ongoing support from the Oklahoma Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts.

American Idiot is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI). All authorized performance materials are also supplied by MTI. www.mtishows.com
