In a landmark decision, the Supreme Court of the United States overturned Roe vs Wade in a 6-3 decision. The top 3 Oklahoma lawmakers reacted to the court’s decision. Oklahoma Speaker of the House Charles McCall said “With Roe overturned and Oklahoma’s several proactive, pro-life policies already in immediate effect, the stage is set for Oklahoma to be America’s most pro-life state”.

Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt said, “I am very excited that the supreme court made this courageous decision. Abortion is a state’s rights issue and it belongs to the people”. Senate President Pro Tempore Greg Treat said “Oklahomans overwhelmingly value life. As a state, we are extremely well-positioned to be able to protect life from its beginning to its natural end. We have enacted laws that anticipated this day and now Oklahoma can fully protect life.”

Oklahoma Senate Democratic Leader Kay Floyd said “I am outraged by the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. The court’s radical and wrongly decided opinion not only takes away fundamental constitutional rights but also seriously endangers the health of women all across our country”.

What it Means

So far in 2022, Oklahoma has been one of the most aggressive pro-life states in the country and has passed several pieces of pro-life legislation this year. The decision from the Supreme Court means that the pro-life legislation Oklahoma has already passed won’t be overturned and that Oklahoma would be free to pass more pro-life legislation.
