St. Louis Cardinals Sign John Mozeliak to an Extension

We’re still about 6 weeks out from the start of the MLB regular season. However, the Cardinals (who you’ll once again be able to hear on CTB Sports 1640/1390AM) are staying busy as they have signed their president of baseball operations, John Mozeliak, to a contract extension to keep him in St. Louis through the 2025 season.

In a press release from the team, Mozeliak said, “I am excited to continue in my current role and understand change will eventually happen. Over the next few years, we will focus on succession planning throughout baseball operations as well as work tirelessly to put a successful product on the field.”

Mozeliak has been with the Cardinals organization since 1995 where he started as an assistant to the scouting department. From there he worked his way up to assistant GM and scouting director where he oversaw the drafting of guys like Albert Pujols and Yadier Molina. Then in 2007, Mozeliak took over the GM role for the Cardinals organization when Walt Jocketty left for the Cincinnati Reds and would hold that position for the next decade. With Mozeliak as GM, the Cardinals organization won a World Series in 2011 and NL pennant in 2013 and didn’t have a losing season. In 2017, Mozeliak was promoted to president of baseball operations and has held that title ever since.

The Cardinals are coming off a season where they took the NL Central title but lost in the Wild Card Round to the eventual NL Champion Philadelphia Phillies. Many in the Cardinals fanbase were wondering if this was it for Mozeliak as he was coming into the final year of his contract. However, that does not appear to be the case and Mozeliak will be sticking around for at least the next few seasons. What happens AFTER 2025 will be interesting to see based off of Mozeliak’s comments where he said, “change will eventually happen.” Will that change come after the 2025 season? Time will certainly tell. Mozeliak has been such a critical part of the Cardinals organization and their success for the last 15 years that whenever it happens, it will be very odd when it does happen.
