The Los Angeles County District Attorney recommended on Thursday that Erik and Lyle Menendez be resentenced for the 1989 slaying of their parents, citing renewed public interest in the case following a new documentary and controversial Netflix series. District Attorney George Gascón emphasized that although he still believed the murders had occurred, resentencing was appropriate due to extenuating circumstances. The recommendation, which would make the brothers eligible for parole, will be presented to a Los Angeles Superior Court Judge. Jose and Kitty Menendez were fatally shot in their Beverly Hills home as they watched TV on Aug. 20, 1989. Following two mistrials, the brothers were eventually convicted. They were 18 and 21 at the time, and their defense involved allegations of sexual abuse. (NPR)
