Elvis Presley’s blue suede shoes were immortalized in song as the opening track of his self-titled 1956 debut album. On Friday, The King’s legendary footwear was sold at auction for over $150,000. According to auction house Henry Aldridge & Son, Elvis’ blue suede shoes were purchased by an American collector who lives in California. Presley famously wore them on his appearance on The Steve Allen Show. Elvis was wearing formal wear that night, and he quipped, “I think that I have on something tonight that’s not quite right for evening wear,” while he showed off his blue suede shoes to the crowd.

“The price for me reflects the importance of such an iconic object,” said auctioneer Andrew Aldridge. “The sale of the shoes reflects the iconic nature and the enduring fascination in Elvis.” In other Elvis news, July 2 marked the 70th anniversary of the day that his music was first played on the radio. Memphis, Tennessee DJ Dewey Phillips was the first one to ever play Presley’s first ever song, “That’s All Right,” introducing the music world to Elvis Presley. (ABC News)
