After missing a series of dates at the start of the Outlaw Music Festival tour because of an undisclosed illness, Willie Nelson made a triumphant live return at his annual 4th of July Picnic celebration. The show took place this year in Camden, New Jersey, the first time Willie’s holiday musical party took place outside of Texas in 15 years. The 91-year-old country legend was accompanied by his son Lukas Nelson and the Family Band, and Willie performed over 20 songs during his set, by all accounts looking and sounding in fine form.
During the performance, Nelson debuted his new song, “The Border,” which is the title track from Willie’s 75th studio album that was released on May 31. Willie rejoined the Outlaw Music Festival at two dates over the weekend, and will hopefully be part of the tour when it starts back up again on July 29 in Chula Vista, California, where Willie will be joined by Bob Dylan, John Mellencamp, and Brittney Spencer.
