Amy Barnes, a beloved 6th-grade science teacher at Chisholm Middle School, passed away on Sunday night following a battle with leukemia.

In addition to being a science teacher, Mrs. Barnes also served as an assistant coach for the Chisholm High School volleyball and track teams.

In a statement released on the Chisholm Public School District’s Facebook page, Superintendent Marcus Chapman said the following:

“Mrs. Barnes epitomized the Longhorn spirit; she was strong, resilient and caring. As a teacher, she helped countless sixth-grade students grow their passion for science. Beyond the classroom, she exemplified grace and compassion, always ready to help others with a smile. She lived life joyfully and nothing brought her greater happiness or pride than her family.”
Mrs. Barnes was loved by so many, and her passing will be difficult for us all.
Counselors are available for students at school today and will continue to be for as long as needed. If your child would like to talk with someone about their concerns or feelings, please contact the school to let us know. We have many caring professionals who can support and assist them.
Chisholm is a close-knit school community. In our school family, no one experiences pain or loss alone. Just as we have rallied around the Barnes family over the last few months, we will continue to support them and one another during this difficult time.
Please continue to keep the Barnes family in your thoughts and prayers.”
