EnidLIVE’s Derek Darr sat down with the Lahoma Chief of Police, Matthew Hankins, and Assistant Chief of Fire Justice Stevens to talk about the upcoming 4th of July Celebration in Lahoma.
Hankins started off by sharing what’s new for this year’s celebration, along with a rundown of the event.
“This year we have a car show that’s going to kick off [at] about 10 a.m. If you [have] any old cars and want to come out and see them, come out and register. And that day for the event, we have a whole hog lunch that’s going to start at 11 a.m., and we’ll have random vendors out there throughout the day…we’ll have turtle races, we’ve got games set up, bounce houses, the blood mobile will be there, and in the evening time we’ll have a live band. A beer wagon will be set up and then we will have fireworks, hopefully around 9:30 p.m. if the daylight goes down enough.”
Hankins also gave a small sneak peek at what’s to come for the massive fireworks show.
“We’re expecting to make it a lot bigger this year, and we also have more special effects that we have added that you won’t ever see anywhere else or have not seen yet.”
The Chief highlighted the excitement and community spirit of the event that, despite its chaotic nature, is enjoyable and beneficial for the entire town.
“It’s probably the best thing we do all year. It can get a little western, a little crazy bout there, but I think it’s fun and gets everybody involved. It’s great for the entire town. It’s a way…to give back to them, and it’s just a fun time all around.
