Bert Leon Hinderliter
1951 - 2025

A Celebration of Life for Bert Hinderliter, 73 will be announced at a later date. Arrangements are made by Anderson-Burris Funeral Home and Crematory.

Bert was born on June 30, 1951, in Enid, OK to Eula Mae (Peck) and Leon Francis Hinderliter. Bert walked through heaven's pearly gates on May 3, 2025 in Enid, OK with his loving wife by his side.

Bert was the middle child with older sister Betty and younger sister Brenda. They moved around a lot growing up but landed back in Enid, OK during Bert’s junior year of high school. They moved around during his younger years because their father Leon was a meat cutter for different grocery stores. Bert’s first day at EHS was also the day he met the love of his life, Mary Beth Hopper. Bert graduated from Enid High School in 1969 and then again in 1973 with his Bachelors of Science in Business Administration from Phillips University. He then married the love of his life Mary Beth on June 2, 1973 at Central Christian Church in Enid, OK. They shared a loving marriage for almost 52 years. During that time, they had two children Heath and Hillary. During these years Bert was a Meat Cutter and Owner of Hinderliter Meat Market. Once the market closed, he continued his love for meat cutting at United Supermarket and Jumbos Foods. In 1999 his younger sister Brenda called him about a teaching position opening up at EHS that she thought he would be perfect for. Bert took this opportunity, went for the interview, got the job and began his teaching career at Enid High School in the Fall of 1999 as their DECA teacher. During the beginning of his teaching career, he went back to school taking the necessary courses to get his teaching certificate. While teaching at EHS the students started to call him the “Cookie Man”! This was because of Bert's superb fundraising skills and the Otis Spunk Myer oven he had in his classroom. He would bake cookies as a fundraiser for his DECA students to help pay for their trips. They were some delicious cookies! Bert also continued to be a Meat Cutter part time in the evenings, because no one can survive on a teachers salary in OK and he had a love for the craft. He retired from Meat Cutting in 2014 and then from teaching in the Spring of 2016.

Bert loved baseball and played growing up. While playing baseball he broke his thumb which always fascinated his daughter Hillary for its odd shape. During his teen years he didn't have time to do much traveling or playing because he was always working Harvest.
Bert would travel to Eagles Nest, NM as a child during the summers with his family. He then later shared his love of this place with his wife, children and grandchildren. They have continued to share their love of this beautiful place with their families.
Bert liked to hunt and fish and shared this with children Heath and Hillary. He also shared his love of fishing with his granddaughter Makayla.

Bert was a gambler and loved playing card games at the Casino. He also frequented Palace Bingo (before it closed), Oklahoma casinos, and played the OK lottery every week until the day he passed. His love for gambling was also shared with his family who carry on the joy of gambling responsibly.

Bert was a Freemason and member of Enid Lodge 501 and Pond Creek Lodge 125. During his younger years as a Mason, he was also a member of the Akdar Shrine and a Shrine Clown who went by “Freckles”. He became a Master Mason, was the Past Master of Enid Lodge 501 and a 32nd Degree Mason.
He is survived by his wife Mary Beth, children Heath and Hillary, sister Brenda Zweifel, 4 grandchildren; Makayla, Hannah, Dorian and Morgan, and 5.5 great-grandchildren; Harlee, Maria, Jahseh, Zakai, Irina, and baby Hinderliter on the way!
He is preceded in death by his parents Eula and Leon Hinderliter and his sister Betty Patterson.
We would like to express our appreciation for all the care and humor that the following people provided Bert over the years. Abiding Nurses, Elara Care, St Mary's Wound Care Nurses and Staff, Dr. Rogers, Dr. Whinery, Dr. Cooper and LTCA of Enid.
