Velma Poplin, longtime resident of Ponca CIty, Oklahoma passed away Tuesday June 11th,

Velma was born on October 5th, 1931 in Red Rock, Oklahoma. The daughter of Glen & Adelene
“Blaikie” Nelson. She was one of seven children.
She grew up on the farm working with her family. At times the family picked cotton and when her
little fingers and legs got too sore and tired she would take a break, sitting on her momma's
gunny sack being pulled along for a little rest. She went on to graduate Ponca CIty High School,
while attending Ponca CIty High School she worked at the Ponca Theater in downtown Ponca
On July 23rd, 1950 she married George LeRoy Poplin, they were married in Perry, Oklahoma.
They had one child, Larry Don Poplin 4/19/1952.
Velma was a homemaker but she also worked outside the home. She worked at the Ponca CIty
Country Club and then later attended Pioneer Vocational School, receiving certification in
Business and Accounting. She went on to work at the Kay County Courthouse in Newkirk,
Oklahoma. Retiring from there in early 2000.
Velma and husband LeRoy opened their home to their great niece, Heather Dickison when she
was very young whom they raised as their own and went on to be the grandparents of Heather’s
3 children and 4 step-children.
Velma lived to care for her family ,she loved spending time with her husband and her son Larry
water skiing as well as always being by LeRoy's side assisting him with their trapshooting range
and whatever crazy project LeRoy had going on. And it is said that she loved being a
grandparent more than anything, from cooking to daring rap dances, bike outings, attending
movies and going to parks, she did it all and it was always with a smile, hugs and love.
She was so much to so many and has left us with so many good memories and the knowledge
of what unconditional love truly means. May she rest with her angels and family til we see her
She is survived by her son Larry Poplin and her daughter Heather DIckison. Grandchildren
Crystal McFadden, Shelby Edelmann, Tanner Botts, RIlee Brown. Step- Grandchildren Haylee
Coons, Heather Brown, Jessica Brown and Ashlee Teafatiller.
