CTB Sports Director Derek Darr sat down with Chisholm Baseball Head Coach Riley Thompson to discuss the upcoming Merrifield Tournament.

Thompson emphasized that facing strong teams and quality pitching early in the season has prepared them well for success against tough competitors in their current district games.

“[At] this point in our season, we’re trying to gain momentum. Early in the year, we saw a lot of really good teams and saw a lot of good pitching. So I think that, more than anything, the thing that is contributing to the success that we’re having as far as those day one and day two arms that we’ve been seeing in districts. I feel very well prepared to go to and do well against those guys with just the kind of pitching that we saw from teams like Dale, Tuttle, and Community Christian early on in the year.”

Thompson expresses anticipation and excitement for the Merrifield Tourney, highlighting a desire to be recognized as the best team in the area and viewing it as a precursor to the playoffs.

“We look forward to it; definitely have it on the calendar and circle it. It’s kind of [about] seeing who the best baseball team in the area is, and there are a lot of talented teams around Enid. And so, we want to have the right to be able to say that we’re the best team in a 25-mile radius. And that is a great setup for playoffs….”

Chisholm starts its Merrifield Tournament run on Thursday, as the Longhorns play Pond Creek-Hunter at Failing Field on the campus of NOC-Enid to start the day.
