It’s been a season of ups and downs so far for the Enid Plainsmen baseball team. The Plainsmen started the season red hot on a 6 game winning streak. Things were looking good and the Plainsmen looked like they were the team to beat in 6A Baseball. The offense was rolling and the pitching was on point. Then, they suffered their 1st loss of the season on March 18th and that started a stretch of downs for this team as they then lost the next 4 games after that for a 5-game losing streak to fall to 6-5 on the season. However, this week it appears that the Plainsmen may have turned a corner as the Plainsmen picked up 2 wins this week against Booker T. Washington (4-2 on Monday at David Allen and 7-2 Tuesday at Booker T.)
That being said, this weekend’s Enid Festival at David Allen Memorial Ballpark is going to be a real tell on if this team has turned a corner or not. The host Plainsmen will play 3 games in 3 days against very tough competition. Albeit, none of these games this weekend are district games. However, it is a chance to get the momentum rolling as the Plainsmen will have extremely important district games early next week against Muskogee (a doubleheader on Monday). This weekend’s games are 3 games that head coach Brad Gore won’t take lightly, and it will be interesting to see the approach and gameplan of this team the next 3 night.
The fun starts tonight with the host Plainsmen taking on Norman North at 6:30PM. Norman North comes into tonight’s game scuffling a little bit as their record sits at 4-10 on the season (0-6 in district play). The Timberwolves offense has really been struggling as they have only mustered up an average of 2.5 runs per game during their current 7-game losing streak. They’ll certainly be looking for a quality win to get their season turned around.
Tomorrow, the Plainsmen will have their hands full with one of Kansas’ best…Blue Valley North. The Mustangs come into Friday night’s contest relatively fresh as the baseball season just started last week in the state of Kansas. They sit at just 1-2 on the year but in talking with their head coach earlier this week, this team would love nothing more than to come down to Oklahoma and make some noise and that’s what they intend on doing. This team could not be more excited to make the long journey from Overland Park to Enid to play at David Allen Memorial Ballpark and the sweet cherry on top would certainly be beating the host in their own building. That game will also start at 6:30PM.
Then to wrap up the weekend on Saturday night, the Plainsmen will have to take on another Oklahoma 6A opponent (again non-district) in Edmond North. And looking at Edmond North’s season coming in…they have a lot of similarities to the Plainsmen this season. They started the season red hot and got off to a 5-0 start. But then, like the Plainsmen, they ran into some hard times and they proceeded to lose 5 of their next 6 games while only scoring 2.8 runs per game in those 6 games. They then followed that up with 2 shutout victories this week against Putnam City on Monday and Tuesday this week and will enter this weekend at 9-5 on the year (5-1 in district). The Plainsmen and the Bulldogs will face each other Saturday night at 6:30PM
Like I said, 3 very challenging opponents await the Plainsmen this weekend at David Allen Memorial Ballpark. This stretch of baseball will tell a lot about this team as these are the kinds of games you have to win if you are looking to win a State Championship. We look forward to seeing how things will shape out. And don’t forget, you can listen to all 3 Plainsmen games on your home for Plainsmen Baseball CTB Sports 1640/1390AM!
