CTB Sports Director Derek Darr sat down with Pond Creek-Hunter Baseball Head Coach Brent Hendrix to discuss the upcoming Merrifield Tournament.

Hendrix started off by discussing how the team feels when the Merrifield rolls around every year.

“We’re always excited about playing there. This tournament is very difficult, the field is very tough. But just giving our kids the opportunity to play at David Allen Ballpark, it’s just a beautiful place, and I was on one of the teams that first played there in this tournament…we’re one of the original founding teams that started the tournament.”

The coach highlighted the game plan for the tournament, as well as the difficulty.

“I think playing five games in three days is the most difficult part of this, especially for your pitching. Usually, what we try to do is just go out, throw strikes, make plays, try to throw as few pitches as possible and stretch those games. Stretch those pitchers into more innings…we want [start] playing our best baseball at this time of year….”

Pond Creek-Hunter will start start its Merrifield Tournament run on Thursday, as the Panthers play Chisholm at Failing Field on the NOC-Enid campus to kick off the day.
