The Oklahoma Sooners have officially departed for the SEC leaving the Oklahoma State Cowboys without their main rival in the conference. Let’s take a look at who is most likely to fill the Sooner’s shoes.
Texas Tech Red Raiders: A cross-state rival and old Big-12 South foe that Cowboy fans love to hate, especially with their similar mascots. These 2 teams play each other nearly every year in the Dust Bowl.
Kansas State Wildcats: Also a cross-state rival and a fellow Ag school, these 2 schools share a lot in common and have played each other for decades, unlike Texas Tech the rivalry goes back to the old Big 8 Conference days.
Iowa State Cyclones: Like the Cowboys, the Cyclone’s main rival is in another conference maybe freeing up each school for a new dancing partner. Many Oklahoma State fans haven’t forgiven the Cyclones for eliminating the Cowboys from National Championship contention in 2011. They also are former Big 8 foes.
Colorado Buffaloes: Maybe the Buffaloes can be the new rivals Oklahoma State is looking for. They have a Coach with a huge personality that will draw ire from opposing fans and a shared history from their time together in the Big 8 and old Big 12.
Final verdict: Texas Tech Red Raiders
Like the Cowboys Texas Tech needs a true rival, other options for the Red Raiders like TCU and Baylor have larger rivalries with each other. Plus the rivalry game already has a name.
