(Enid, OK) Garfield Elementary School returned to school this morning as it was on lock-out for a portion of the day on Thursday after an unauthorized visitor attempted to enter the school that morning, and parents of children, who normally walk home, were asked to pick up their children at dismissal time.

The Enid Police Department responded and took a woman, who showed signs of mental illness, into protective custody for evaluation, said Cass Rains, EPD public relations coordinator. The incident was described as “a woman who is not a parent or guardian and had no business to be on school property was attempting to get on school property” by Miranda Johnson, communications specialist for Enid Public Schools, who had contacted EPS Police and Enid Police Department.

A message to Garfield parents from Garfield principal Amanda Rader emphasized that “students and staff are safe,” and that “the school day resumed as normal for students and staff with no one leaving the building,”. The Enid Police Department had the situation under control by the time school let out and students who walked to school were allowed to walk home.

The incident only involved Garfield Elementary School, according to district officials.
