(Enid, OK) Teachers from Three Enid elementary schools are participating in a new online course that will prepare for English as a Second Language certification.

EPS’  Coolidge, Eisenhower and Monroe were chosen as test schools for the new Teachers of English Learners Pilot Project, with 14 other schools statewide, due to the high enrollment in ESL students, according to a press release.

Teachers who complete the 18-hour course, before Dec. 31, will receive an $80 voucher for the ESL certification exam.

EPS school officials applauded the course, which was created as part of the nonprofit Oklahoma Foundation for Excellence’s project, a development program that includes a virtual learning platform.

Monroe has 93 of its 316 students enrolled in its ESL program, while Eisenhower has 32 students in ESL, according to September’s EPS enrollment figures.

Following the pilot project, organizers will begin a statewide roll-out in partnership with Oklahoma State Department of Education.
