Over the weekend, Patty Smith joined The National on stage as they played a sold-out Madison Square Garden concert. Not only opening the show, but also coming back to sing a song with the band that she unknowingly inspired.

Frontman Matt Berninger noted a comment she made on Instagram: “Try to remember the best of him,” He said it had inspired many of his lyrics. In fact, it’s the bridge refrain of new song called “Smoke Detector,” a track the band debuted live earlier this month.

TL;DR:

  • Patty Smith joined The National onstage.
  • Frontman Matt Berninger noted she had inspired many of his lyrics.
