Selena Gomez told Elle that her desire to help others is what got her through some very serious health problems and bouts with mental illness.

The Rare Beauty founder, who also guest edited September’s Latinx issue, told the outlet, “My lupus, my kidney transplant, chemotherapy, having a mental illness, going through very public heartbreaks—these were all things that honestly should have taken me down. Every time I went through something, I was like, ‘What else? What else am I going to have to deal with?'"

The 29-year-old admitted that while she didn’t have all the answers, she was sure of one thing.  She remembered saying to herself, “You’re going to help people."

And she has. In July, her beauty brand announced the launch of the Rare Impact fund which will raise $100 million over the next 10 years to help address the gaps in mental health services for underserved communities.
