Weezer’s Rivers Cuomo Says Song On New Album Was Inspired By Shakespeare

One song on the new Weezer album was directly inspired by Shakespeare. Lead singer, Rivers Cuomo saw a performance of Romeo and Juliet four years ago at the Ohio Shakespeare Festival, and afterwards wrote the song titled, “Opening Night.”

In an interview with NPR, he talked about sitting under the stars, watching the production with his wife. He journaled about it and described the scene and then a few years later was reading over his notes and started the song.

“Opening Night,” specifically mentions seeing “Romeo and Juliet” under the stars. The lyrics name Shakespearean characters from other plays such as Hamlet and Falstaff.

Weezer’s current single is called “A Little Bit of Love,” it’s from their album, Spring. Sznz
