Metallica returned to its roots on Thursday night (September 16th) when they performed a 16-song set at San Francisco's the Independent. Blabbermouth reported the group played the 500-capacity downtown club and had previously hipped fans via social media, posting, "Hey! Gonna let you in on a little secret. . .  We're playing tonight at The Independent in downtown SF. Grab a $20 bill and get your ass to the box office right now! Proof of vaxx is required to get a wristband and it's gonna sell out fast. One ticket per person, cash only!"

Drummer Lars Ulrich told us a while back that playing different sized venues keeps shows fresh for the band: ["I think that we vary it enough for ourselves, and for the fans too, that we're not in competition with ourselves. Y'know, we play stadiums, we play arenas, we play the Bowery Ballroom, we play the Fillmore, we play — y'know, each place and each type of setup has its own kind of vibe. The great thing for us is just being able to bounce back and forth between them so it never gets super-stale or stagnant, y'know?"] SOUNDCUE (:23 OC: . . . or stagnant y'know)
