Oscar-winning director Sam Mendes (American Beauty, Skyfall, 1917) will make four different movies about The Beatles, with each told from one of the band members' points-of-view. An official statement says the different films will intersect to “tell the astonishing story of the greatest band in history.”

Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, and the families of the late John Lennon and George Harrison are backing the project, and all the music rights have been granted — which is a first for a scripted film about The Beatles. “I’m honored to be telling the story of the greatest rock band of all time, and excited to challenge the notion of what constitutes a trip to the movies,” Mendes said.

The release strategy for the movies is unclear, but Sony says it will be “innovative and groundbreaking.”
