Earlier today the Enid Police Department put out the following press release. At 6:04 p.m. Monday, Aug. 22, 2022, a 911 call was received reporting a woman being stabbed at a residence located at 707 N. 12th. Officers arrived and found a 32-year-old woman holding a towel to her neck and bleeding.

The woman was transported by Life EMS to a staging area on 30th Street and was flown to OU Medical Center in Oklahoma City where she was treated and later released. Detectives were called to the scene of the incident and learned the woman had been arguing with 32-year-old James Allen Schmitt.

During the argument, Schmitt stabbed the woman and also struck her 12-year-old son as he attempted to defend his mother. Family members at the residence said Schmitt left the scene in a 2012 Nissan Rouge. Officers searched the area but were unable to locate the vehicle.

A search warrant for the residence was obtained and executed. A serrated kitchen knife and screwdriver were collected and taken into evidence. Detectives also obtained a warrant for Schmitt’s arrest on complaints of assault with a dangerous weapon and child abuse.

At 2:44 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 23, 2022, another call was received from 707 N. 12th reporting Schmitt had returned to the residence and was seen driving south from the area in the silver Nissan.  Officer Robert Fleer saw the Nissan turn from 10th Street onto Broadway and initiated a traffic stop in the 700 block of East Broadway. Schmitt was arrested on the warrant without incident.
