In this interview, CTB Sports Director Derek Darr sat down with the new Enid Head Basketball Coach, Derrick Irving, to discuss his plans for the program.
The coach started off by sharing his history of coaching before joining Enid’s Basketball team.
“This will be my eighth year of coaching. I started coaching college basketball when I was 19 years old. I joined as an assistant coach at ASA College in Brooklyn, New York. I was there for three seasons; after that, I transitioned into coaching prep school basketball, so I was [the] assistant coach at Tennessee Preparatory Academy in Memphis for a year. After that, I came back home for about eight months…Since then, I’ve been an assistant coach for the Enid Outlaws TBL team here in town….”
When questioned if knowing the kids beforehand gives an advantage, here is what Coach Irving said.
“I do think it does give me an advantage. At least it gives me a head start on being able to scheme an offense that can really take hold with all the qualities that we have with the players. I’ve gotten to know a lot of these boys over the last three years, even some of our freshmen. I’ve dealt with them at the middle school level. This is my first year teaching at the high school full-time….”
