In this interview, CTB Sports Director Derek Darr sat down with the Fairview Head Football Coach Robert Bernard to discuss the season opener with Alva.
The coach began by sharing how summer practices and summer pride went:
“It was really good. We had some spots that we feel like we definitely got better at. We also had some spots where we were a little nervous about how their kids are going to fit into this scheme or our system, so we got a lot of things fixed over the summer and spring practice, so that was definitely a good thing. We felt good coming out of the spring; got into our summer pride, and we had a good summer. Coach Nelson puts them through pretty tough workouts, so we feel like we got stronger and faster, and we’re really proud of the effort the kids put into it and can’t wait to see what comes of it when we start it up.”
Coach Bernard expanded on the Alva Goldbugs and what to expect in this rivarly matchup:
“It’s a rivalry, so you’ve got to expect the unexpected, because you have a short sample of what they’re going to be like this year through the scrimmage, so you’re kind of just going into it: ‘hey, we’re going to be basic, we’re going to do this’…so it’s going to come down to who wants it the most and we’re going to be aggresive, we’re going to play hard and they have a really good football team.”
