Wildfires Force Highway Closure in Ellis County

The junction of US-60 and US-283 in Ellis County is closed due to rampant wildfires.

Oklahoma is under oppressive winds with speeds reaching 55 mph until midnight of Feb. 27; here are some precautions to take during this wind advisory:

  • Do not discard lit cigarettes out your window when driving; embers can build and spread easily
  • Be careful with driving with hanging chains, sparks can form.
  • Have an alternate route in mind in case of an emergency evacuation.

Numerous counties are in a Reg Flag warning for fire in Oklahoma. Counties in critical fire risk include Garfield, Grant, Kay, Pawnee, Payne, Logan, Kingfisher, Alfalfa, Washita, Greer, Harmon, Oklahoma, Kiowa, Jackson, Tillman, and Caddo County.

Counties in extreme fire risk include Ellis, Woodward, Dewey, Custer, Beckham, and Roger Mills.

Southeast Oklahoma is at lower risk of fire.
