1940 - 2026
Mattie Anne Kirby, born June 8, 1940, in Stratford, Oklahoma, to Robert Leroy Harper and Rosa Belle (Wells) Harper, went home to her Heavenly Father on September 2, 2026 at the age of 86.
One of eight siblings, Mattie spent her early years in rural Oklahoma and Colorado. In 1958, she married Ronald Burl Sutherland. As an active-duty Soldier, Ronald and Mattie were stationed at Fort Hood, Texas, where they welcomed the first of their three children. The family later settled in Farmington, New Mexico.
After Ronald’s passing, Mattie met and married Lucky Kirby, and together they welcomed their daughter, Kendra. In 1977, the family moved back to Oklahoma and made their home in Sulphur.
Mattie was a creative and enthusiastic crafter who enjoyed making dolls, clothes, jewelry, and many other handmade treasures. She found joy in creating beautiful things and sharing her talents with those around her. Her greatest treasures, however, were her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also cherished the companionship of her beloved fur-babies and enjoyed spending her free time surrounded by those she loved.
Mattie will be remembered for her creative spirit, her love for her family, and the many special memories she created throughout her life. Her love and influence will live on through the generations of family she leaves behind.
Mattie was preceded in death by her first husband, Ronald Sutherland; her parents, Robert Harper and Rosa Belle Harper Trent; her brothers, Walter, Tommy, Lloyd, and Robert “Bob”; her sisters, Alpha and Arlena; and her children, Burl Sutherland and Elsie “Lea” (Sutherland) McKinney.
She is survived by her son, Richard Sutherland of Ardmore, Son-in-law Marty McKinney; Mattie's daughter, Kendra Kirby of Sulphur; granddaughters Keri Watts and spouse Dominic of Beaverton, Oregon; Brandy Lawson and spouse Robin of Sulphur; Kristin Kemp of Sulphur; and Madison Duncan and spouse Chance of Moore; grandson Derek Kemp and partner Viridiana of Pflugerville, Texas; and her great-grandchildren, Brendan Lawson, Sam Watts, Shomarie Watts, Saren Watts, Jacob Watts, Peyton Motes, Kendall Kemp, Memphis Duncan, and Lucky Duncan.
Mattie leaves behind a lifetime of love, laughter, creativity, and cherished memories. Though she will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her, her family takes comfort in knowing she is now at peace, reunited with loved ones who went before her and resting in the loving presence of her Heavenly Father.
