In this interview, CTB Sports Director Derek Darr sat down with the Alva Head Football Coach Ryne Wilson to discuss the upcoming football season.
The coach emphasized how spring practice marked a period of transition for the team, as they adapted to the absence of long-standing players like Lance Mathers and Campbell Gasford, while embracing the excitement and potential of new talent in key positions.
“The spring practice looked a little different. Anytime you don’t have a Lance Mathers, Campbell Gasford, Hunter Flader, Cass Shipley, when you’ve had those guys that have been staples in our program for the past two, three, four years, things look a little different. But it’s exciting. We’ve got a lot of guys in a lot of new spots, and we’re really excited about what they’re going to do. We lost some key pieces, but at the same time we don’t ever look backwards….”
Coach expressed pride in his players’ growth and readiness, reflecting on how far they’ve come since their early days.
“I’ve been around these guys for a while. Some of these guys I coached when they were in fifth grade in rec league basketball…they’re ready for their moment. They’re ready for it to be their show and not somebody else’s…excited to make something theirs and call it their own. We’re excited [with] what they’re bringing to the table.”
