In this interview, EnidLIVE!’s Colby Talley sat down with the Blackwell Head Boys Basketball Coach, Kenny Daughtery, to discuss the PCH Tournament.
Coach started by laying out a background to the basketball team:
“We’re young and experienced. I’ve only got one senior that’s gotten any playing time in the last couple of years. So it’s just kind of having to change that culture a little bit and do a little bit of rebuilding. But I’ve got some strong pieces that we’re trying to build around. We did let one, I think, in my opinion, slip away from Perry being the first game of the year. But I lost my point guard to a football injury that we had this summer. So we’re trying to, you know, recover from that and then a couple other things with a couple other players.”
The coach highlighted the team’s capabilities in preparation for the tournament:
“We’re trying to get out and run a little bit faster.
Use our quickness a little bit. We’re not [really] just super fast, but try to use a fast break [so] that we can advance the ball quicker and try to get some easy shots. The other night we shot, oh, we didn’t shoot very many threes. I think we shot 12 threes, which they’re accustomed to shooting anywhere from 30 to 40. We were, I think, around 70% from inside the paint. We had 36 of our 45 points in the paint. We only shot six free throws. We were three of six on the free-throw line. So we’re just trying to be more in attack mode and not settle. And we’ve done a really good job of that in the first game. Hopefully, we can continue to do that. But most of our shots were in the paint.”
