The Cherokee Strip Regional Heritage Center has announced it will host the travelling exhibit “Sorting Out Race: Examining Racial Identity and Stereotypes in Thrift Store Donations” starting Thursday, Sept. 3.
The run for the exhibit will be from be from this upcoming Thursday to Friday, Oct. 30. The cost to view the exhibit will be included with regular museum admission at no additional charge.
The exhibit, being held in the J.E. & L.E. Mabee Gallery explores complicated themes and displays racially offensive images associated with items found in thrift stores. The end goal of this exhibit is to push forward an healthy community conversation about our issues with race, asking whether these images are harmless reminders of past attitudes or a perpetuation of hurtful stereotypes.
The concept for the exhibit arose from a desire to divert thrift store items with racial content from those shops to an exhibit where their existence can be used for the public good. The Kauffman Museum at Bethel College in North Newton, Kansas oversaw the creation of the exhibit, using items found in Kansas thrift shops from 2010 to 2015.
