CTB Sports Director Derek Darr sat down with Tammy Wilson and Shawn Mahaffrey from Fling at the Spring to discuss the Free Music Festival.

Shawn began by sharing some history about how the event started:

“It started in 2003 with Sylvan Reynolds, and he did it with Jerry Allen as a fundraiser to repair the springs that were broken at the park at the time, but it just continued as an annual festival after that. A few years ago, Sylvan retired, and Michael Dotson and I took over, and then we formed a non-profit, and now we have a board of about five of us that have continued to put the festival on every year.”

Shawn shared some insight on the reception of the event:

“I think everybody always has a pretty good time. I mean, I’ve never really heard anybody complain…I think everybody is always surprised by the amount of talent that comes to this festival. Every year, it’s always incredible. We always have…incredible musicians and wonderful folks that come and perform. I think that’s one thing people always take away from it: how much talent we bring to this festival.”
