The City of Enid has commended Margo Holmes, Program and Development Coordinator at Enid Public Library, for her significant contributions in developing an English language learning initiative tailored for Marshallese speakers.

The city council invites the community to their meeting on Monday, May 5, where her contributions will be recognized.

The program aims to empower the Marshallese community in Enid by enhancing their language skills, thereby improving their future prospects. The recognition comes as part of the celebrations for Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month this May, highlighting Holmes’ commitment to inclusion, education, and community support.

Holmes spoke about how important language is in helping people succeed.

“Enid’s Marshallese community has deep historical roots tracing back to the Cold War Era. It now makes up about 5% of our city’s population and has become an important part of Enid’s culture and economy,” Holmes said. “Offering English classes for Marshallese speakers helps them get better jobs, communicate with their children’s schools, improve their healthcare, and take a more active role in the community.”
