The Enid Police Department announced on Wednesday their intent to encrypt their radio communications.

The department makes it clear that the change is not to hide anything from the public, but to ensure the safety of officers and protect the privacy of Enid citizens. The release also cites incidents involving false reports of shootings and incidents where officers have had their locations posted to social media during active shooting events.

“Encryption is an important step to protect the safety of our officers and other law enforcements agencies responding to dangerous situations,” said the EPD Media Release. “Encryption would also protect the privacy of those we encounter during our shifts, including victims.”
