In this interview, CTB Sports Director Derek Darr sat down with Pond Creek-Hunter Head Football Coach Tanner Bowman to talk about the Grant County War against Medford.
The coach began by sharing what it’s like to be a part of a rivalry game:
“Some of our coaches in the past had a number one versus number one in this game about 25 years ago, and so it definitely adds another dimension to the game. It’s always a game that’s a good game either way, no matter what the rankings are. It’s a rivalry game, and as a lot of people know, if you follow sports, anything can happen in a rivalry game. And so a lot of the time the rankings don’t matter anyway, but it’s definitely something cool for people to talk about….”
Coach Bowman expanded on how important this rivalry game is for both towns, as well as the bragging rights:
“It’s important for the bragging rights of it; it’s inevitable with the town. So close, Medford being the county seat; you go up there, and you feed people. The town always has half of Pond Creek related to half of Medford…So it’s a big game in that regard, and I think it’s important to remember for both sides of it that, obviously, with us being in different classes, it’s a good test to see where you’re at and prepare for playoffs. So both teams have a chance to go do something really special in the postseason.”
