In this interview, CTB Sports Director Derek Darr sat down with Timberlake Head Baseball Coach Garrett Powell to discuss the upcoming Merrifield Tournament.
The coach began by sharing how his team gets excited when the tourney comes around:
“My boys look forward to it every year. They love getting to play in the Merrifield Tournament. Of course, what an awesome venue that we have up here in Enid. I mean, it’s the week before Class A and B playoffs. They know whenever this is here, it’s time to turn it up and get going….”
Coach Powell talked about how important the tournament is for the team to learn:
“A couple of years ago, whenever the state removed the tournament restriction, I just kind of thought that getting more tournaments and trying to figure out how to win them and how to because a lot of tournaments these days are pool play. I just feel like if we could figure out how to win a four-team pool, that’ll help us in a regional tournament setting. The more tournaments we win, the less pressure I think it feels like for them when we get to that point in districts and regionals.”
