Hillsdale Christian School’s superintendent and high school principal Steve Hoffsommer spoke with Enidlive.com about the high school’s debut year. Hoffsommer who is in his 1st year as the superintendent and principal has experience as the former superintendent of Kremlin-Hillsdale Public Schools.
He spoke about why he accepted the job saying “our families been deeply involved here I thought well I got a little bit of experience in administration so I thought I’d jump in there and help them get this thing going”.
Hoffsommer also mentioned that having 2 granddaughters who are currently in the 8th grade at Hillsdale Christian School was a factor in his decision. An observation that Hoffsommer made about building the staff at the high school was that despite the statewide teacher shortage, the high school had applications for teachers before it was even officially decided that there would be a high school.
As for the classes that will be taught during the 1st year of high school math, science, English, and history will all be taught as will a computer class. Looking toward the future Hoffsommer mentioned that some parents want an agriculture class but that may be a few years down the road.
For enrollment Hillsdale Christian School will start the year with 10 total students, 6 boys and 4 girls, only one is a senior. The school will even have sports, with cross-country practice already starting. Boys basketball will also have a 16-game independent schedule with hopes to join OSSAA next year.
Track and Field is the only spring sport at the moment but Hoffsommer is hopeful that they will be able to add fast pitch softball once more girls enroll at the school. Hoffsommer also believes enrollment will greatly increase in the coming years saying “within 2 more years we should have 40 kids”.
Hoffsommer also added that “I think a lot of people are sitting back because this kind of a wait and see year for some people”.
