Kansas City Royals a Part of a Historic Offensive Night in MLB

Things have not been great for the Kansas City Royals this season to say the least. 20 games into the season, the Royals were sitting at 4-16 and have been among the worst teams in Major League Baseball all season long. They currently are 2 games ahead of the Oakland Athletics from having the worst record in all of baseball at 28-68 (Oakland is 26-71). Not pretty whatsoever. However, the beauty of baseball is that even the bad teams can be a part of history from time to time.

Last night, the Kansas City Royals picked up their 28th win of the season by defeating the Detroit Tigers 11-10. Kansas City had to hang on as the Tigers scored 4 in the 9th to make it a 1 run game…but Scott Barlow managed to get the final out to send the Royals fans home happy. While the game itself didn’t have any significance, it was the score that did. The 11-10 score was 1 of 3 MLB games yesterday that finished with that very score. That’s the first time 3 games have finished with an 11-10 score in the history of Major League Baseball! But that’s not the only historical thing that took place yesterday in the majors.

Last night in MLB, teams were putting on a show offensively. MLB saw something that they haven’t seen in 129 years (1894)! 12 MLB teams scored in double digits! The last time the league saw at least that many teams in double figures…was July 4th, 1894 when 13 teams were in double figures. Yesterday tied for the 2nd most teams to score double digits in the same day…tied with May 30th, 1884!

So outside of the Royals and Tigers playing to an 11-10 score, the other 10 teams who put up double digit runs are posted below:

  • The San Francisco Giants beat the Cincinnati Reds and the New York Mets beat the Chicago White Sox by the same 11-10 score
  • The Chicago Cubs thumped the Washington Nationals 17-3
  • The Arizona Diamondbacks win a wild one with the Atlanta Braves 16-13 (that sounds more like a low scoring football game)
  • The LA Dodgers and the Minnesota Twins both won their games against the Baltimore Orioles and Seattle Mariners respectively 10-3
  • And finally, the Cleveland Guardians beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 10-1

One other fun notes from yesterday in MLB, every team in the AL Central scored 10 or more runs! That’s just the 2nd time in the divisional era (since 1969) that each team in a division has scored double-digit runs on the same day. The other instance was September 15th, 2000, when the AL West did so. So the saying is true, “You just never know what you’re going to see on one particular day in MLB.” Because on a random Tuesday in July…history can be made.
