In this interview, CTB Sports Director Derek Darr sat down with Pioneer Head Football Coach Gus Overstreet to talk about the rivalry with Waukomis.
The coach began by discussing the importance of the rivalry game and how the two communities are close together:
“You know everybody. All the kids know one another. A lot of their staff over there, I know them. A lot of people over there, a lot of their kids that are playing are kids of the same age as my brothers and everything…It’s a little close community. Pioneer and Waukomis know one another. We know what’s going to be brought to the table. We’ve got to step up to the plate, just like I know they’re going to do the same thing. It’s always fun and exciting to play a school that’s close.”
Coach Overstreet expanded on Waukomis, sharing the excitement of playing against a team close by:
“It’s nice to get to play the school that’s just down the road, especially since both programs have been doing extremely well. Coach Donaldson’s doing a fantastic job there, getting the program where it’s at. They’re definitely a playoff contender team, and they can always go make some noise.”
